Arkansas Earthquake — 4.7 Magnitude
The linked article just below reports on the swarm of earthquake activity that has been occurring in Arkansas. Just yesterday the most severe of the lot struck Sunday, February 27, 2011. There is little confirmed information about the cause of the trembler although there is some speculation that “fracking” is contributing to the occurrence. Comments to the article mention that the area is one of seismic activity historically.

New Madrid Waiting To Happen
Whether these quakes are related to the New Madrid area or not I do not know. I have written several articles in this blog reporting seismic activity in the Gulf of Mexico and Jack Freed’s theory that the Gulf of Mexico is an active seismic area connected with the New

Madrid seismic region. Freed’s theory is discussed here and demonstrates his thinking, which he utilized in tracking historic seismic activity through the middle of the United States and identifying the connection to the Gulf of Mexico.
There are a couple of additional blog posts that I have written documenting the increased seismic activity in the Gulf of Mexico oil-producing and developed regions. The underwater structures have not been built to standards designed to withstand earthquake forces. There have been considerations to the problem in a study done by Texas A& M for the government. Another curious issue raised by my report is the change in the location of the epicenter of a quake that struck near the Atlantis production site before it went into production. At any rate with the seismic activity increasing in number and intensity of earthquakes Freed’s theory takes on more validity.
